When approach motivation and behavioral inhibition collide: Behavior regulation through stimulus devaluation
نویسندگان
چکیده
In the present article a theory is outlined that explains why and when behavioral inhibition alters stimulus evaluations. In addition, some initial evidence is presented that supports the theory. Specifically, results of three experiments show that refraining from responding to stimuli results in devaluation of these stimuli, but only when these stimuli are positive. These findings suggest automatic behavior-regulation, in terms of devaluation of positive stimuli, in situations in which environmental cues triggering approach (because of the positive valence of the stimulus) run counter to situational demands (cues that elicit behavioral inhibition). Relations of the present research to self-perception, cognitive dissonance, and psychological reactance are discussed. 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Impact of Religious Coping Techniques on the Well-being and Behavior Regulation of Adolescent Girls Struggling with Behavioral Issues
Context and Objectives: Adolescence stands out as a critical phase marked by intricate psychological and physiological shifts, often leading to unstable mental states and subsequent behavioral challenges. This study aimed to explore the impact of instruction in religious coping strategies on the overall well-being and regulation of behavioral inhibition and activation systems among adolescent g...
متن کاملDo impulsive individuals benefit more from food go/no-go training? Testing the role of inhibition capacity in the no-go devaluation effect.
Not responding to food items in a go/no-go task can lead to devaluation of these food items, which may help people regulate their eating behavior. The Behavior Stimulus Interaction (BSI) theory explains this devaluation effect by assuming that inhibiting impulses triggered by appetitive foods elicits negative affect, which in turn devalues the food items. BSI theory further predicts that the de...
متن کاملInteroceptive conditioning with a nicotine stimulus is susceptible to reinforcer devaluation.
Pavlovian conditioning processes contribute to the etiology of nicotine dependence. Conditioning involving interoceptive stimuli is increasingly recognized as playing a role in many diseases and psychopathologies, including drug addiction. Previous animal research on diminishing the influence of interoceptive conditioning has been limited to antagonism and nonreinforced exposures to the drug st...
متن کاملStimulus devaluation induced by stopping action.
Impulsive behavior in humans partly relates to inappropriate overvaluation of reward-associated stimuli. Hence, it is desirable to develop methods of behavioral modification that can reduce stimulus value. Here, we tested whether one kind of behavioral modification--the rapid stopping of actions in the face of reward-associated stimuli--could lead to subsequent devaluation of those stimuli. We ...
متن کاملReward devaluation disrupts latent inhibition in fear conditioning.
Three experiments explored the link between reward shifts and latent inhibition (LI). Using consummatory procedures, rewards were either downshifted from 32% to 4% sucrose (Experiments 1-2), or upshifted from 4% to 32% sucrose (Experiment 3). In both cases, appropriate unshifted controls were also included. LI was implemented in terms of fear conditioning involving a single tone-shock pairing a...
